Guide to the Harem or Directory to the Ladies of Fashion. New York, 1855 This pocket-sized guide includes names, addresses and rankings for the many brothels that were located on what is now the lower east side and greenwich village.

Untitled Shunga Woodblock Print (1860s, Japan). This scene may be set in an unlicensed brothel or it may depict lovers. The garment is a bit too gaudy for a geisha and the obi isn't tied in the front like a sex worker, yet the location suggests a brothel.
